Ailton Moreira

Braga, Portugal

Technology and Information Systems Engineer, researcher, and lecturer, Ailton Moreira dedicates his career to creating technological solutions that make people’s lives simpler, more efficient, and more meaningful. Based in Braga, Portugal, he combines a solid academic background with practical experience in industry, research, and teaching, with a special focus on the digital transformation of healthcare.

Academic Journey

Ailton completed his Integrated Master’s degree in Engineering and Management of Information Systems at the University of Minho in 2017. His dissertation, titled “Hospital Personal Assistant” (Assistente Pessoal Hospitalar), supervised by Professors Manuel Filipe Santos and Carlos Filipe Portela, explored the use of mobile technologies to improve the patient experience in hospital settings.

In 2016, he took part in the Erasmus programme and spent a semester at Poznań University of Technology in Poland. This international experience strengthened his technical skills and ability to work in multicultural teams, while broadening his global outlook.

Between 2018 and 2024, he pursued a PhD in Technology and Information Systems at the University of Minho, specializing in Health Information Systems. His doctoral thesis, “Multichannel Mobile Companion for Personalized Healthcare Services”, supervised by Professor Manuel Filipe Santos, proposed conceptual models and prototypes for multichannel and omnichannel platforms that deliver continuous, personalized healthcare using open data approaches and openEHR specifications. The work contributed to accelerating digital transformation in healthcare, supporting both clinicians and patients.

Research and Scientific Contribution

Since 2018, Ailton has been a researcher in the Intelligent Data Systems group at the ALGORITMI Research Centre (University of Minho). He has participated in several research and development projects applied to Portuguese hospital units, including the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto and Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Vila Verde. His work focuses on interoperability, multichannel and omnichannel interaction, decision-support systems, and remote patient monitoring platforms (such as AIDA Notes and AIDA Work).

He is the author and co-author of several scientific publications in international journals and conferences, covering topics such as omnichannel healthcare, maturity models for omnichannel adoption, Bring Your Own Device in clinical contexts, and interoperability and security in healthcare services. In 2025, he became co-leader of Work Package 3 of the European consortium Xpanding Innovative Alliance (XiA), contributing to the development of interoperability skills within the framework of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

Professional Experience

Ailton’s career bridges academia and industry:
